Are you worrying so much it’s stopping you from doing those things you really want to do?
Do you find yourself worrying about something that’s happened or may happen in the future? When you are in this state of worry your body reacts as if you are in danger. It raises blood pressure and fills your system with adrenaline and the stress hormone cortisol and ultimately goes into “fight or flight?” mode. This can leave you feeling anxious and overwhelmed.
When you spend a lot of your time worrying like this you experience a kind of hypnotic paralysis, when finding the solution is almost impossible as you are only visualising the problem.
This was once me, I used to worry about everything, I even used to worry about worrying and it was exhausting! This led to me having a number of panic attacks which was when I knew I had to take control and do something about it.
This is what worked and continues to work for me today, I also use it a lot in my practice. If you find yourself spending a lot of your time worrying, why not give it a go!
- Stop and acknowledge what you are worrying about. Is it a hypothetical situation where your imagination has gone into overdrive and those ‘What ifs’ are being replayed over and over again, or is it a current situation?
- If hypothetical then ask yourself how likely is it to happen? Rationalise with yourself. If you were to refer back to previous worries, I suspect the majority of those ‘What if’s’ rarely happened. Distract yourself once you have done this with something you enjoy, maybe call a friend or watch something on TV. For me, I usually go for a run.
- If you can do something about it, take action! If you can’t do it straight away, make a plan for when you can. Firstly ask yourself how can I eliminate this worry? Plan what you need to do, when you’ll do it. Maybe write it down as this will give your brain permission to let it go. After you have done this distract yourself with something you enjoy.
